Partnership with Porthos
ExxonMobil is an important player in the Dutch industry. Our refinery and facilities in Rotterdam are among the most energy-efficient in Europe and we want to maintain this position. For refineries and chemical plants a rapid transition to sustainability is not easy. Switching to – for example – electrification takes a lot of time and will require an enormous amount of green electricity. That is why we are working at projects that can help reduce the CO2 emissions of our Rotterdam facilities – like Porthos, a project organization of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Gasunie and EBN.
We have signed an agreement with Porthos and three other companies to work on preparations for capturing, transport and storage of CO2 under the North Sea. Initially, our plan is to capture the CO2 from our hydrogen plant. We are looking at existing and new technology we want to test here.
Cabon capture and storage (CCS) is an important part of achieving the goals of the Dutch Climate Agreement. Experts see it as one of the few ways in which the industry could quickly reduce CO2 emissions.
Rotterdam, but the Netherlands as such, is a very suitable location for CCS applications. We are a small country, the industrial facilities are located close to each other and empty offshore gas fields are suitable for safely storage of CO2 underground.
